THIS SITE http://openprog.altervista.org/ Has a project describing a pic programmer. USB powered, it uses an 18F2550 or 18F25J50 as its programming chip. Everyone may have already heard of the programmer, but thought I would mention it. I did build one and it seems to be quite capable, although it does not cover all the pics yet. Check it out if you have a moment.

On my previous post the two pics which can be used are the PIC182550 and PIC18F25K50 apparently the j an k keys are to close for my fat fingers.

For the 18F25K50 there's also this one from the same guy who does the Pickitminus software ...
Nice thing about that one is you can use it with MPLAB as a debugger, UART serial analyzer, etc.
