PicKit2 Standalone Programmer

Has anyone updated the PK2Device.dat file for the PicKit2 to program the Pic18F46K40.

Not that I'm aware of, but if you find something let us know.

Right now, for the K40 I think you're sort of stuck with using a Pickit3 and the MPLABX IPE (or one of the MPLABX command line tools)

Found a stand alone programmer from Northern Software (NSDSP-1-5V) very fast and works well. Programs most Microchip microcontrollers. Very happy...

I think that PICKit3 is really the best solution for people who cannot affort an IDC3 or RealIce. It gets updated for almost all new PIC chips and it's not that expensive.
